Take a Pledge to Counter Hate Speech
We are painting the world with colorful hand prints to celebrate the beauty in diversity. The painted hands create a powerful visual that we are all connected to a shared cause: we want to end hate speech.
-
To counter hate speech online, our social media campaign asks people to raise a painted hand and take a pledge to pause and think before posting – and to ask their friends and family members to take the pledge.
-
In person, we are asking people to put their hand prints beside others on a poster that shows they have taken the pledge to pause.
Our research showed people often avoid or ignore hate speech to block out negativity or avoid becoming targets. So, it was important to Paint the World URI to create a movement that gives people who have been quiet a chance to be proactive express their feelings against hate speech.
Take the Pledge to Pause
-
Paint a hand. Take a photo with your painted hand up and post it on social media with the hashtag #PledgetoPause. Nominate others to do the same.
-
Put your handprint beside others on a banner to show that you are committed to a movement that counters hate speech.
Each raised hand makes a difference.
Online and off, the collected hand prints tell a story: we are all human, and there is no room for hate speech in our community.
